The influential de Burgh family were the primary supporters of the friary, often safeguarding it to ensure tranquility. However, in 1538, English forces killed many friars and imprisoned two hundred others.

From that time, Ross Errilly seldom experienced peace due to ongoing confiscations by the English until it was fully deserted approximately two centuries later.
