- Aughnanure Castle - The formidable O’Flaherty family, known for their motto ‘Fortune favours the strong,’ governed west Connacht for three centuries from this impressive six-storey tower on the shores of Lough Corrib.
In 1546, the O’Flahertys allied with the Mayo O’Malleys when Donal an Chogaidh O’Flaherty wed Grace O’Malley, later famed as Granuaile, the legendary pirate queen. The O’Malley motto, ‘Powerful by land and by sea,’ reflected the respect commanded by their family.
At Aughanure today, visitors can explore the remnants of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, a unique double bawn with bastions, and a dry harbour. Be on the lookout for the three species of bats that now inhabit the castle.
- Joyce Country Sheepdogs - Joyce Country Sheepdogs is part of a family-operated farm located in Connemara, Co. Galway on the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland. Visitors are invited to experience a working hill sheep farm and observe the Border Collie sheepdogs herding Connemara Blackface sheep.
Joe Joyce represents the third generation of his family to farm sheep in the Joyce Country area. Approximately 700 years ago, the rugged terrain attracted a Welshman of Norman descent named Thomas Joyce, who married a local woman and settled in the area now named after him.
- Sky Road - The Sky Road in Clifden is among the most scenic areas in the Connemara region. This 16km circular route takes travelers west from Clifden, onto the Kingstown peninsula, and back into Clifden via the N59. The peninsula is also part of the Wild Atlantic Way driving route. The views along the Sky Road are simply breathtaking. Few places in Ireland can rival the rugged beauty and diverse scenery visible from the Sky Road.
