Gallipoli served as the epicenter of Salento’s large-scale oil trade. It was from this place that oil was transported across Europe, illuminating cities and homes alike. This trade led to exceptional wealth in the city and neighboring areas, evidence of which remains visible today.
We will set off on our bicycles toward Sannicola, located in the interior regions. Here, we will explore a historic underground oil mill from the 17th century. As we traverse the countryside, with vineyards and dry-stone walls coming into view, we’ll get a glimpse of Galatone’s historical center. Following this, it’s back to the seaside to relish the raw beauty of Porto Selvaggio. We’ll take a leisurely stroll through a pine forest before settling down for a swim and delightful picnic.
Our journey concludes with a return to Gallipoli, comfortably cycling along the coastline.
