- Galle Fort - Located in the Bay of Galle on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, Galle Fort was initially constructed by the Portuguese in 1588 and later extensively fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onwards. This monument of historical, archaeological, and architectural significance has retained its polished appearance for over 423 years, thanks to the comprehensive restoration efforts by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.
- Galle Fort Lighthouse - While Galle Fort Lighthouse is a major attraction, its historical and cultural significance is even more noteworthy. Although there are other lighthouses along Sri Lanka’s coast that offer more visually stunning views and allow visitors to climb to the top for breathtaking vistas, this lighthouse remains a key point of interest.
- Flag Rock Bastion- Galle - Situated at the southernmost tip of the Fort, Flag Rock was once a Portuguese bastion. Today, it is the most popular spot to watch the sunset. During the day, adventurous locals can be seen diving into the water from the rocks. Numerous vendors offer delicious street food, such as fresh papaya with chili powder, from their carts.
During the Dutch era, ships approaching the coast were warned of the dangerous rocks by signals from the bastion atop Flag Rock, which is how it got its name. Musket shots were fired from Pigeon Island, near the rock, to further alert ships. Although the lighthouse built by the Dutch here has been removed, the nearby street name remains.
- Ariyapala Masks, Puppets And Museum - The art of Sri Lankan masks has existed since ancient times. Mask carving is a traditional craft in the southern coastal region of Sri Lanka, with Ambalangoda being renowned for its traditional mask carvings and mask dancing.
- Sea Turtle Farm and Hatchery - Habaraduwa - The Mahamodara Sea Turtle Hatchery is a turtle conservation center located just a short drive from Galle. It is one of several conservation centers dedicated to breeding and preserving turtles on the island, operated by volunteers. Upon entering, visitors receive an overview of the center’s system and conservation efforts and are given a tour. During the visit, guests can get up close to these gentle creatures and even touch them.
- Stilt Fishermen Sri Lanka - Stilt fishing is one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating traditional fishing methods, believed to have originated just after World War II. Fishermen sit on a crossbar called a ‘petta,’ tied to a vertical pole driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this elevated position, they cast their lines and wait for fish to bite. Although the method appears primitive and ancient, it remains a captivating sight.
- Madu Ganga Biodiversity Area - The Madu River is a wetland near the small town of Balapitiya along the Colombo-Galle highway, marking the estuary of the Madu River. This one-hour tour offers a boat safari through the untouched depths of the mangrove marshes in the Madu River. A unique experience available here is a foot massage from hundreds of Doctor Fish.
