Enjoy a cup of tea with a nice fresh samosa - a triangular pastry filled with savory goodness. Try some of Sri Lanka’s more exotic fruits. After a walk around the Galle fort, go for a more filling meal. You will have the choice of selecting a packet of lump-rice or lampreys as some of the food stalls advertise, or a giant plate of the much spoken about koththu rotti. Discovering Galle One Bite at a Time - I had an absolutely amazing food tour experience in Galle with Chirath, and I can highly recommend it to anyone visiting Sri Lanka.
We started at a local canteen where I tried traditional hoppers (appa) and what I believe were oil cakes (kavum) for the first time, paired with a beautiful cup of Sri Lankan tea. A perfect introduction to local flavours.
After that, we explored more street food spots inside the fort. I got to try a variety of local bites, including spicy sambols, fried snacks, and chilli-based dishes with fresh greens, all full of flavour and completely different from anything I’ve had before.
One of my favourite moments was stopping for fresh mango with chilli powder, which was such a simple but incredible combination. Sweet, spicy, and refreshing.
We also watched the sunset together while Chirath shared insights about the history of Galle and Sri Lanka, which made the experience feel much more personal and meaningful.
To finish the food part, we had what he called one of the best kottu roti in town, along with an egg-based dish by that point I was already so full, but everything was delicious. Any leftovers were even shared with local stray animals, which says a lot about the kindness and atmosphere here.
We ended the evening at a members-only tennis club, enjoying a glass of arrack with roasted cashews and garlic, a perfect way to round off such a unique experience.
Chirath is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also very warm and genuine. He also owns a local hair salon, which is worth checking out if you’re around.
Thank you as well to the team who organised this via Booking.com, this was truly worth it and one of the highlights of my trip.
A very special experience. Highly recommended.

Great tour with friendly and knowledgeable guide - We had a great time with Nelum as our guide on a walking tour of Galle fort. We sampled a variety of Sri Lankan street food and Nelum is friendly and very knowledgeable about the history (and cricket!). We finished with drinks at the Galle cricket ground as the sun set, it was a lovely way to end the tour. Thank you Nelum and Chirath!
