Ascending the Hills of Gakenke

The allure of Gakenke’s rolling hills had been calling to me ever since I first heard about the Local hills hiking experience. As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, the promise of spectacular views and a glimpse into the local lifestyle was irresistible. I arrived at the starting point, greeted by the warm smiles of our guide, Allan, and the porters who would accompany us on this journey. The air was crisp, and the anticipation was palpable as we set off on our hike.

The trail was a gentle ascent, winding through lush landscapes that seemed to stretch endlessly. The pace was comfortable, allowing us to savor the beauty around us. A Night Under the Stars

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we gathered around a covered fire pit, the flickering flames casting a warm glow on our faces. Our tents, provided by Beyond Gorillas, were set up with care, complete with mats and sleeping bags for a comfortable night’s rest. The evening was spent in the company of new friends, sharing stories and laughter under a canopy of stars.

Dinner was another culinary delight, accompanied by a bottle of wine that added a touch of elegance to the rustic setting. The fire pit became a focal point, a place where we could unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures.

The following morning, after a hearty breakfast, we began our descent. The journey down was swift, taking less than two hours, but it was filled with a sense of fulfillment and gratitude for the experiences we had shared.
