- Funchal - Upon arrival at Funchal’s port, the private taxi tour begins with a visit to Funchal’s bustling main market. Here, a vibrant selection of fish, exotic fruits, local crafts, and flowers is available. From fresh octopus and tuna at the fish stall to the beautiful flower displays, visitors will experience the local shopping culture.
- Camara De Lobos - The next destination on this half-day luxury tour is Camara de Lobos, located west of Funchal. This charming fishing village is named after the monk seals that often visit the harbor. The village center, with its whitewashed houses, shops, and bars where the local drink poncha can be tasted, offers a delightful conclusion to the tour.
The tour then proceeds to a tasting of the renowned Madeira local wine at the modern, glass-fronted wine lodge, Henrique e Henrique. Established in 1850, the lodge boasts the largest vineyards on the island and produces some of the finest Madeira wines.
Founded in 1850, Henrique & Henrique has recently garnered numerous medals and awards for its efforts to modernize the image of Madeira Wine.
- Madeira - The tour concludes with the iconic Monte Toboggan run, one of Madeira’s most celebrated attractions. Originating in the 1850s, the Monte Sledge—a wicker toboggan—was once the primary mode of downhill public transport. Two men, known as “Carreiros,” dressed in white and wearing straw hats, guide this downhill journey. They use special rubber-soled shoes to steer and brake the toboggan, which is essentially a wicker basket on two wooden runners that glide on greased rags.
The descent takes about 10 minutes along a winding road, reaching speeds of up to 30 mph!
Book this tour early to avoid disappointment, as this private tour of Madeira with wine tasting is popular and fills up quickly. The price is comparable to large coach tours, but offers the luxury of traveling in a private taxi.
