Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to the God of Learning, Sugawara no Michizane, and is the principal shrine among the approximately 12,000 Tenmangu Shrines throughout Japan. As Kyushu’s largest shrine, it draws numerous visitors from around the globe.
The shrine boasts a vermilion-painted main hall, historical structures such as Tenka Inari Shrine and the Treasure Hall, and natural beauty including camphor trees, ume (plum blossoms), and irises. The sacred “Flying Plum Tree,” believed to have flown overnight from Kyoto out of devotion to Sugawara no Michizane, is a highlight.
Visitors frequently come here to pray for academic success, especially during exam seasons when the gates are adorned with prayer plaques (Ema).
