- Dazaifu Tenmangu太宰府天満宮 - Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the esteemed deity of learning and scholarship. It is the principal shrine among approximately 12,000 Tenmangu shrines across Japan and stands as the largest of its kind in Kyushu.
In addition to the striking vermilion main hall and exquisite gardens, visitors can explore historical sites such as Tenkai Inari Shrine, the Treasure Hall, and the Sugawara History Museum. The shrine grounds are adorned with ancient camphor and oak trees, seasonal flowers, and the renowned plum blossoms cherished by Michizane.
One of the shrine’s most celebrated attractions is the sacred “Flying Plum Tree” (Tobiume), which legend claims flew overnight from Kyoto to Dazaifu out of devotion to Michizane.
Students from all over Japan visit the shrine to pray for success in exams and academic achievements. During exam season, the shrine gates are adorned with ema (wooden prayer plaques), creating a breathtaking sight.
- Beppu Ropeway - The Beppu Ropeway is a top attraction in Oita, linking the base of Mount Tsurumi (1,375 meters) to its summit.
The ropeway stretches approximately 1,816 meters and takes about 10 minutes each way. During the journey, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Beppu City, Beppu Bay, and the surrounding mountains.
At the summit, visitors can explore observation decks, walking trails, and rest areas while taking in stunning 360-degree views.
From June 22 to July 17, 2026, the Beppu Ropeway will be closed for scheduled maintenance. During this time, the tour will visit Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) instead.
