Although the inner grounds are currently closed to the public for renovations, Kumamoto Castle remains the city’s most beloved cherry blossom viewing location. Nearly a thousand cherry trees are planted throughout the castle grounds and the nearby public parks.

In 1623 (Genna 9), following the wishes of Nagamasa Kuroda, lord of the Fukuoka domain, 50,000 koku were allocated to his third son Nagaoki, establishing the Akizuki domain. The next year, Nagaoki constructed and resided in Akizuki Castle. It was a modest castle designed like a camp, divided into the Omote-goden (government office), where Akizuki Junior High School was located, and the Okugoden (living quarters of the feudal lord). Today, the ‘Black Gate’ has been relocated to the approach to Suiyo Shrine, dedicated to Choyo, but it originally stood at the back of KAWARAZAKA as the main gate. The ‘Choyamon’, which served as a service gate, is the only historic site that remains in its original position. The Sugi-no-Baba Street leading to the castle ruins is a popular springtime destination, featuring a stunning tunnel of cherry blossoms.

The food stalls in Nakasu begin to appear around 6pm. It’s just a short subway ride from Hakata Station, so if you have the opportunity, consider visiting on your own.
