The key distinction of Port wine is the addition of brandy to halt fermentation, preserving the grapes’ natural sweetness while maintaining a high alcohol content. This practice began in the 17th century when English merchants sought Portuguese wines that could endure long sea voyages. To prevent spoilage, they started fortifying the wines with brandy.
