From Waves to Volcanoes: Discovering Chicabal’s Mystical Beauty
When the waves are calm, I seek adventure elsewhere. The Chicabal Volcano and Lagoon Trek in Guatemala promised a blend of culture and nature that I couldn’t resist. Here’s how it went.
The Road Less Traveled
As a seasoned traveler, I’ve learned that the journey is often just as important as the destination. This was certainly the case on my recent adventure to the Chicabal Volcano and Lagoon in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. The drive to the parking lot was an adventure in itself, with Waze leading us astray onto a washed-up dirt road. After a thousand-point turn, we found our way back to the main road, guided by a local sign pointing us in the right direction. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best way to navigate is to trust the locals and their knowledge of the land.
Once we arrived at the parking lot, we opted for a ride in the local 4x4, affectionately known as “el torito,” which cost us 25Q per person. The ride was bumpy but exhilarating, offering a taste of the rugged terrain that lay ahead. At base camp, we stocked up on snacks, though I noted that gluten-free options were scarce, a tip for fellow travelers with dietary restrictions.
The Climb to the Clouds
The hike to the top of the Chicabal Volcano is not for the faint of heart. It’s a 1.25-mile trek straight up, but the promise of breathtaking views kept us motivated. As someone who spends most of his time chasing waves, the climb was a refreshing change of pace. The air was crisp, and the sun was relentless, so sunscreen was a must for this sun-soaked journey.
Reaching the summit, we were greeted with a panoramic view of the lake and the majestic Santa Maria Volcano. It was a moment that made every step worth it. The descent to the lake involved 466 steps, a challenge for the legs but a feast for the eyes. The lake itself is a sacred site, untouched by human hands, and its serene beauty was a reminder of the spiritual significance it holds for the Mam Mayan people.
A Sacred Retreat
Sitting by the shores of Laguna Chicabal, I felt a deep sense of peace. The lake is a place of ritual and reverence, where Mayan priests perform traditional ceremonies. Though we couldn’t touch the water, its presence was enough to inspire reflection and gratitude.
After soaking in the tranquility, we made our way back up, choosing a path that bypassed the steps. The return journey was a chance to reflect on the day’s experiences and the rich cultural tapestry of the region. We caught a ride back to the parking lot, our hearts full and our spirits lifted.
This trek was a departure from my usual surf-centric adventures, but it was a reminder of the diverse beauty that Central America has to offer. Whether you’re a surfer, a hiker, or simply a lover of nature, the Chicabal Volcano and Lagoon is a destination that promises to leave you in awe. Chicabal Trek
