From Surf to Sunsets: My Greek Island Adventure
When the waves took a backseat, I found myself drawn to the ancient allure of Greece. An 8-day tour through Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini promised a different kind of adventure, one filled with history, stunning vistas, and unforgettable experiences.
Athenian Beginnings
The moment I touched down in Athens, I could feel the pulse of history beneath my feet. The city, with its ancient ruins and vibrant streets, was a world away from the sun-drenched beaches and perfect waves I usually chase. But there was something about the energy of Athens that drew me in, much like the pull of a perfect swell.
Staying at the President Hotel, I quickly learned the importance of requesting a non-smoking room and a double bed in advance. The hotel itself was decent, but the real gem was the top-floor restaurant. The view of Athens from up there was nothing short of spectacular, and the food was a delightful surprise. I found myself lingering over meals, soaking in the cityscape as the sun dipped below the horizon.
Exploring Athens was a whirlwind of ancient wonders. The Acropolis, with its towering Parthenon, was a sight to behold. I wandered through the Acropolis Museum, marveling at the artifacts that told stories of a time long past. The city tour, led by the knowledgeable Dimitri, was a highlight. His passion for Athens was infectious, and I found myself wishing the tour would never end.
Mykonos Magic
The ferry ride to Mykonos was an adventure in itself. I heeded the advice to lock my luggage and was grateful for the motion sickness pills I packed. As the island came into view, I was struck by its beauty. Mykonos, with its whitewashed buildings and azure waters, was a paradise waiting to be explored.
Staying at the New Aeolos Hotel, I was greeted by Betty, whose warmth and helpfulness made me feel right at home. The hotel was conveniently located next to a local BBQ restaurant, where I indulged in some of the best food of the trip. My days in Mykonos were spent wandering through Little Venice, sipping cocktails at Bar 180, and watching the sun set over the bay. Each moment was a reminder of why I love this nomadic lifestyle.
I couldn’t resist the allure of a jeep tour around the island. The freedom of the open road, the wind in my hair, and the stunning vistas made for an unforgettable day. Mykonos was a place of contrasts, where the vibrant nightlife met the serene beauty of its beaches.
Santorini Serenity
Santorini was the final stop on this Greek odyssey, and it did not disappoint. The Rosebay Hotel, with its proximity to the beach, was the perfect base for exploring the island. The half-day city tour was a revelation, showcasing the island’s unique charm and breathtaking views.
I spent my days wandering through the narrow streets of Oia, capturing the iconic blue-domed churches against the backdrop of the caldera. The sunsets in Santorini were unlike anything I’d ever seen, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. It was a fitting end to a journey that had been as much about discovery as it was about relaxation.
Throughout the trip, the service provided by Mazi Travel was impeccable. From the seamless transfers to the personalized attention from Mr. Klearchos, every detail was taken care of. It was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are those where you can simply let go and enjoy the ride.
As I boarded the plane back to my next surfing destination, I carried with me memories of Greece’s top destinations, each one a chapter in a story I was lucky enough to live. Until the next wave calls, I’ll be dreaming of the sun-soaked days and starry nights of Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini.
