- Frascati - The journey begins in Frascati, a town that combines natural beauty with a rich historical heritage, highlighted by its magnificent noble villas. The old town is dominated by the Cathedral of St. Peter, dating back to the sixteenth century, featuring noteworthy artworks. Numerous exquisite villas, including Villa Aldobrandini, Villa Falconieri, Villa Mondragone, and Villa Torlonia, contribute to its reputation as one of the most beautiful towns in the Castelli Romani.
- Grottaferrata - The tour proceeds to Grottaferrata, renowned for the Abbey of S. Nilo, believed by scholars to be Cicero’s Tusculanum. The city is a lush garden of nature trails and archaeological sites, cherished by Romans during holidays and especially on its most significant celebration: the patron saint’s day on March 26.
- Marino - Next is Marino, a charming wine capital where, during the traditional Grape Festival in October, wine flows from the seventeenth-century Fontana dei Mori. “Le fontane che danno vino” (The Fountains that give wine), as the Roman folk song celebrates, is dedicated to the trip to the Castles during the Grape Festival. Marino is built over an extensive network of caves, some interconnected, located about 12 meters below the surface, stretching for tens of kilometers beneath the Old Town. These caves have a long history, having been excavated from volcanic tuff for building materials since medieval times. Marino is situated along “Via dei Laghi” on the crater of Lake Albano. A stroll through the city reveals the Basilica of San Barnaba, featuring a nineteenth-century fountain at its center. In the expansive Piazza Garibaldi, visitors can admire the small seventeenth-century church of S. Maria delle Grazie and the convent of the Suore Domenicane. Built in the seventeenth century, it includes the church of the Madonna del Rosario, with a circular design and some of the most intriguing rococo furnishings in Lazio. The town is also famous for its Ciambella al Mosto, a treat to savor during the grape harvest.
- Castel Gandolfo - The visit continues to Castel Gandolfo, or Castello in Roman dialect, renowned worldwide for the summer residence of the Popes. The area is dotted with numerous other summer homes, villas, and cottages, making it one of Lazio’s most famous resorts. Its territory encompasses nearly the entire coastal arc of Lake Albano, which also hosts the Olympic Rowing Stadium. There are several archaeological sites of interest, including Diocletian’s Palace and the late medieval walls, offering stunning views of the lake. In the city center, Piazza della Libertà features a small fountain by Bernini, who also designed the S. Tommaso church.
- Ariccia - Before returning to Rome, the tour concludes with a visit to Ariccia, the birthplace of porchetta, a dish that has gained worldwide fame as a high-quality gastronomic product and has received IGP recognition. Ariccia is not only known for porchetta but also for producing many of the meats that make the Castelli Romani cities famous. The Porchetta di Ariccia Festival, held annually since 1950 on the first Sunday of September, is a must-see event featuring pork sandwich launches, food and wine exhibitions, musical performances, and plenty of entertainment. Ariccia also boasts a significant architectural and cultural history, having seen its buildings destroyed during barbarian invasions and many rebuilt by Bernini, such as the Chigi Palace and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Assunzione.
