• Franz Josef - The journey begins by departing Franz Josef, also known as Kā Roimata o Hinehukatere, and traveling north along State Highway 6 to our initial destination.
• Lake Ianthe - Encircled by hills and native podocarp forests, with a significant flax swamp at its southern end, this lake is a vital habitat for endangered wetland species like the Great Crested Grebe. Nestled in a former glacial trough, the lake is bordered by a moraine and drains into the Wanganui River via Ianthe Creek. A brief stop is made here for photos before proceeding to Hokitika.
• Hokitika - Known as the ‘Cool Little Town,’ Hokitika is renowned for its rugged black sand and driftwood-strewn coastline. After a quick photo opportunity at the beach to admire the surf and views of the Tasman Sea, there is an option to explore local shops or join the group for a visit to the Hokitika Gorge.

Hokitika Gorge (1 hour) - One of the West Coast’s most iconic and photographed locations, its vibrant turquoise waters create a striking contrast with the mature native podocarp forest surrounding it. With various lookout points offering different perspectives of the captivating river, it is a favored spot for nature lovers and photographers. The trail is easy and gently undulating.

• Greymouth - *A brief stop is made in Greymouth at the Information Centre to drop off guests who have opted for the TranzAlpine from Greymouth to Christchurch (booked and sold separately). As the largest town in the Westland region, Greymouth, or Māwhera, is home to approximately 14,000 residents. Surrounded by rugged cliff tops, wild beaches, the Grey River, and the scenic Grey Valley, this charming town is not only a beautiful location but also a key transit hub and community for the West Coast.
• Cobden Beach - *Just a short drive from the center of Greymouth, Cobden is a beach break with a rock breakwater at its southern end, creating impressive waves that crash against the structure. It’s a rugged yet picturesque spot for photos.
• Otira Viaduct Lookout - Also referred to as Death’s Corner, the Otira Viaduct Lookout offers a stunning view of the National Park in all its splendor. This bridge is the reason driving through Arthur’s Pass is possible today. At 440 meters long, it is a remarkable engineering achievement. The lookout is an excellent spot for photos of the viaduct and the surrounding landscape. Keep an eye out at this stop! With some luck, you might spot a Cheeky Kea - New Zealand’s mischievous alpine parrot!
• Arthur’s Pass National Park - A short drive brings us to Arthur’s Pass Village. Situated 740 meters above sea level, you can experience the majestic Southern Alps up close. Upon arrival, you can choose to walk to Devils Punch Bowl or enjoy a coffee and explore the local shops.

Devils Punch Bowl - This walking track takes about 1 hour, with a gradual incline (including steps) leading to a powerful 131-meter tall waterfall. The fitness level required is low to moderate as you walk through the bush and native beech forest.

• Lake Lyndon - Next, we stop at Lake Lyndon. Nestled at the base of Porters Pass, Lyndon, or Te Hāpua Waikawa, is popular among jet boaters, bird watchers, and adventurous swimmers. It is known as one of the colder lakes in the area.
• Castle Hill - Castle Hill, or Kura Tāwhiti, is one of Canterbury’s most recognizable landscapes. Famous for its scenery that inspired Middle Earth™, nearby Flock Hill, which shares its geology with Castle Hill, was used as a filming location for The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. The weathered limestone rocks stand proudly on the tussocky hills that were once submerged in the ocean. Over time, they have eroded, forming the unique shapes seen today. While exploring the rocks, you might see climbers and boulderers who frequent the area. Please note that this is a self-guided walk, allowing you to explore this beautiful area independently.
• Christchurch - After a day of exploration, we enter the Canterbury region and head towards Christchurch. Relax and unwind after a wonderful day exploring the Southern Alps and West Coast. With a camera roll full of memories, this day will surely be one to boast about!
