Road to the Isles - Depart from Edinburgh at approximately 8 am, heading north to Dunfermline, one of the ancient capitals. Here, visit the 11th Century Abbey and the ruins of the Royal Palace to see the tomb of King Robert I (“The Bruce”). Continue through Highland Perthshire, known as Macbeth country, with a stop in Dunkeld to explore the 12th Century Cathedral and enjoy a coffee break.
Back on the road, travel to the “Pass of Killiecrankie,” the site of a battle during the Jacobite wars in 1689. Proceeding north, pass Blair Castle and journey through the Grampian and Cairngorm mountains, arriving at Clava Cairns, which dates back to the Stone and Bronze ages, for a visit. The next stop is Culloden Battlefield, the site of the last significant battle fought in Britain on April 16, 1746. Conclude the day with a relaxing evening at the hotel, complete with a well-deserved dram.
Journey to the Isle of Skye
Exploring Rob “Roy” Country, the Romans, Monty Python & Outlander
Edinburgh - Depart the hotel around 8:30 am to continue the journey south. Travel along the banks of Loch Linne into Glencoe, the site of a notorious chapter in Clan warfare in February 1692. After a photo stop, continue south over Rannoch Moor, one of Europe’s last great wildernesses. Passing through Balquhidder, enter MacGregor country, famous for Rob Roy, and make the final comfort stop of the day at the Victorian village of Callander, known for its Roman history, Rob Roy, and the tragic Earl of Callander.
Continue through the village of Doune, home to the remarkable 13th Century Motte and Bailey Castle, associated with Robert Duke of Albany, David Stirling, Monty Python & The Holy Grail, and more recently, Outlander. Finally, reach the main motorway, passing Stirling Castle, the battlefields of Bannockburn, and the ruins of Linlithgow Palace before returning to Edinburgh around 8 pm.
