These architectural features were tactical necessities in regions frequently targeted by pirates and conquerors. To protect themselves from the “Saracen” raids, the residents of Forio devised strategies to complicate the lives of those arriving with hostile intentions: observation and escape. The Forian towers were built for surveillance, while the maze-like narrow streets and towering walls of these palace-castles provided means of escape.
