Setting Sail from Forio

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I made my way to the pier in Forio, ready to embark on the Ischia Boat Tour. The air was crisp, and the promise of a day spent exploring the volcanic island of Ischia filled me with anticipation. As a former professional surfer, the ocean has always been my playground, and today, it was my guide.

Upon boarding, I was greeted with a warm welcome from Enza, Fabio, and their family. Their hospitality was as refreshing as the morning breeze, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee set the tone for the day. The boat, a family-run affair, exuded a sense of home, and I felt like I was joining a family outing rather than a tour.

As we set sail, the Church of the Rescue came into view, perched on a promontory overlooking the sea. The sight was breathtaking, a perfect introduction to the beauty that awaited us. The previous days had seen some rough weather, but today, the sea was calm, and the sky was clear—a perfect day for exploration.

Discovering Ischia’s Hidden Gems

Our first stop was Citara Bay, a sandy haven where the water was invitingly clear. I couldn’t resist the call of the sea and dove in for a swim. The water was cool and invigorating, a reminder of why I love island life. Snorkeling here was a treat, with vibrant marine life dancing beneath the surface.

Back on board, Enza treated us to a delightful spread of bruschetta topped with Ischian tomatoes and a glass of local wine. The flavors were as rich as the island’s history, and I savored every bite. As we continued our journey, laughter and stories filled the air, creating a camaraderie among the passengers.

We passed by the ancient fishing village of Sant’Angelo and the stunning Maronti Beach, each stop revealing more of Ischia’s charm. The highlight, however, was the Green Grotto. The water here shimmered with emerald hues, a natural wonder that left me in awe. It was moments like these that reminded me of the magic of the ocean, a magic I strive to capture in my writing.

A Taste of Ischia

As the day wore on, we made our way to Procida, a neighboring island that was a delightful addition to the tour. Enza arranged for a taxi tour, allowing us to explore the island’s picturesque views and vibrant culture. It was a whirlwind of color and history, a feast for the senses.

Returning to the boat, we were treated to a sumptuous lunch prepared by Enza herself. The pasta with fish was a standout, complemented by Neapolitan buffalo mozzarella and a selection of fresh fruit. The meal was a celebration of local flavors, and the wine flowed freely, adding to the festive atmosphere.

As we sailed back to Forio, Enza surprised us with a homemade dessert, a sweet ending to a perfect day. Fabio, ever the jovial captain, kept us entertained with his playful banter, ensuring that the day was filled with laughter and joy.

Reflecting on the experience, I realized that it was more than just a boat tour. It was a journey into the heart of Ischia, a chance to connect with its people and its beauty. Enza and her family made us feel like part of their world, and for that, I am grateful. This adventure was a reminder of why I love island life and the ocean, and I can’t wait to return to Ischia for another unforgettable experience.
