- Chiesa del Soccorso - The tour of Ischia begins, and upon departing from the port of Forio, the first marvel to behold is “The Church of Soccorso”.
Perched by the sea, its white plaster gleams against the azure sky, making the Chiesa del Soccorso a beloved tourist attraction for visitors to Ischia. It symbolizes the religious and cultural heart of a community deeply connected to the sea, a bond reflected in the church’s architecture.
The original facade of the Chiesa del Soccorso is an eclectic blend of styles, ranging from Gothic to Renaissance, and enriched by Baroque elements. Inside, the church features a nave with three chapels and a basilica layout, showcasing various vaults, including barrel and cross vaults. A small Gothic bell tower adorns the left side of the structure. Another notable feature is the “Cristo di Legno.”
- Spiaggia di Citara - The first stop is at “Baia di Citara,” where delicious bruschetta with Ischia tomato and basil, paired with local wine, will be served.
The bay of Citara is steeped in legends, adding to its allure. These tales, passed down by Forian farmers, speak of myths from ancient times. The name Citara is said to originate from Venus Citarea and the miracle that formed the bay and its baths from the goddess’s tears over losing Adonis. Another version attributes the bay’s creation to Tifeo’s joyful tears upon receiving Jupiter’s forgiveness.
The bay’s marine formation is complemented by the “Pietra della Nave,” a rock believed by legend to be the galley given to Ulysses by Alcinoo, king of the Phaeacians, for his return to Ithaca.
- Belvedere Punta Imperatore - In Forio, facing the vast sea, where waves crash against the rocks, stands the lighthouse of Punta Imperatore.
The view from Punta Imperatore is breathtaking, and one can only imagine the life of Lucia Capuano, the first female lighthouse keeper in history, who lived here in the 1930s. Lucia Capuano, married to Francesco “a’lanterna,” the first lighthouse keeper who died there, took over his duties at just 30 years old with seven children during wartime. Her story is one of female empowerment in an era when women were confined to domestic roles.
- Baia di Sorgeto - Continuing the journey, the bay of “Sorgeto” comes into view.
Sorgeto is a small inlet nestled between cliffs, renowned for its natural thermal park accessible 24/7 year-round. Here, volcanic activity heats the sea bed to about 90°, mixing with seawater to create a natural blend used in thalassotherapy.
Despite being in the open sea, Sorgeto offers the experience of a thermal park pool. The bay is sheltered from winds, allowing for a tranquil, sunlit swim most of the day.
- Sentiero Serrara Fontana a Sant’Angelo - The journey continues with surprises along the beautiful Sant’Angelo, where another swim stop awaits.
Sant’Angelo, perhaps Ischia’s most picturesque village, is part of the Serrara Fontana municipality on the island’s southern side. Known for its postcard-perfect views, Sant’Angelo offers high-quality hotels and a peaceful atmosphere, thanks to its pedestrian-only center.
Sant’Angelo is divided into two parts: the upper area with San Michele Arcangelo church and narrow alleys, and the lower tourist port with a promenade, square, and the tuff islet “la Torre,” connected by a narrow isthmus.
- Maronti Beach - The enchanting Maronti, full of surprises!
“Spiaggia dei Maronti” is one of Ischia’s most famous beaches, surrounded by pristine nature and offering stunning coastal views.
Fumaroles, a notable volcanic phenomenon, can be seen at Maronti beach’s start in Sant’Angelo, caused by the area’s geothermal activity. Here, thermal water reaches nearly 100°C.
Cavascura, Ischia’s oldest thermal basin, retains its historical charm, offering tourists ancient spa experiences with massages, mud treatments, and thermal showers.
- La Scarrupata - Now in Ischia’s “wildest” area, “La Sgarrupata.”
(A stop here is possible if the program changes or the Captain decides based on water conditions).
Sgarrupata is a high coast with layers from different geological eras, featuring stunning colors from ocher yellow to purple red, set against a crystal-clear sea with emerald green seabeds due to posidonia meadows. It’s a must-see spot, accessible by land or sea, though many prefer the latter due to the challenging land route.
-
San Pancrazio - Lunchtime has arrived!
Before enjoying traditional Neapolitan cuisine, an excursion to the “Grotta Verde” in the bay near “Punta della Cannuccia,” close to “San Pancrazio,” is planned.
(Lunch location may vary with weather, and the “Green Grotto” excursion may also change).
San Pancrazio: what’s it about?
A small lake forms behind rocks near the green or earth cave. To enter, one must dive in, and inside, the body glows green as if phosphorescent. This spot is only accessible by sea.
A restaurant, now in ruins from a landslide two decades ago, can also be seen in San Pancrazio bay.
- La Spiaggia e la Baia di Cartaromana - After the “wild area,” the journey continues to “Cartaromana beach” in the namesake bay.
The beach offers a stunning view of the Aragonese castle, with fine sand and clear waters. The seabed is rich in archaeological and faunal treasures.
Erosion has minimized the beach, but sunbathing on the black rocks is still possible. The beach’s hot bath offers natural hydrotherapy in the sea.
Accessible by a challenging path or more easily by sea, it’s a picturesque spot to capture the bay’s beauty.
- Castello Aragonese - Arriving at the majestic “Aragonese Castle”!
(A stop here is possible if the program changes or the Captain decides based on water conditions).
The Aragonese Castle is a fortification on a tidal island of trachytic rock on Ischia’s eastern side, linked by a 220 m bridge to the ancient Borgo di Celsa, known as Ischia Ponte. The islet formed from a synactic eruption over 300,000 years ago, reaching 113 meters above sea level and covering 56,000 m². Geologically, it’s a “stagnation dome,” a magma bubble solidified during eruptions. Access is via a tunnel carved into the rock, commissioned in the mid-15th century by Alfonso V of Aragon. Before then, access was only by sea.
- Spiaggia degli Inglesi - Heading to the Casamicciola-Ischia port area, the beautiful “English beach” bay awaits.
The English beach is a small volcanic beach with pebbles and dark sand on the island’s north coast, sheltered by cliffs. It earned its name during WWII when the British used it as a landing point. Finding this hidden gem adds adventure to a walk, with a cobblestone path near the Ischia Porto pier, marked by vibrant bougainvillea. Visiting early in the morning is best, as the beach gets more sun before the cliff’s shadow takes over. A boat trip is recommended.
- Fungo Di Lacco Ameno - Among the many places to explore, “Fungo di Ischia” in the charming Lacco area is a small island symbol and a unique spot.
The town is set in a natural amphitheater overlooking the sea. Notable sights include the town hall tower, Santa Restituta basilica, Santa Maria delle Grazie parish, the museum, and Santa Restituta excavations.
The “Fungo” is a green tuff rock about ten meters high, located in the sea on a small cliff. It was ejected from Mount Epomeo centuries ago, cooled in the sea, and shaped by wind and water over time.
- Madonna Di Zaro - Nearing Forio, the mountainous Zaro coast, with its luxurious homes, offers a unique feature: the “Madonna of Zaro” apparition on the 26th of each month.
In 1994, prayer groups formed in the home of brothers Paolo and Luigi after they claimed to see the Madonna, attracting families. On October 8, 1994, Paolo, Luigi, and sisters Imma and Marianna visited Zaro woods, climbed a hill, and found a clearing with two rocks. There, they prayed the Holy Rosary, and the Heavenly Mother appeared to Paolo, declaring the place blessed.
That evening, during a home rosary, Our Lady told Luigi that Zaro would become a pilgrimage site.
- Spiaggia di San Francesco - The final beauty before returning to Forio port is “San Francesco” beach.
(A stop here is possible if the program changes or the Captain decides based on water conditions).
“San Francesco” beach in Forio is a romantic spot, nestled between “Punta Caruso” with its cacti and the ancient town of Forio, guarded by the church of the Rescue.
The sea here is a special emerald color, home to small fish colonies around protective reefs or in the mountain-side cave.
- Forio - The journey concludes as the ship sails back to Forio port.
