Sailing Through Serenity: A Day on the Appledore Star
When the call of the ocean beckons, there’s no resisting the allure of a day spent sailing through the mangroves and wildlife of Key West. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a schooner, embarking on an unforgettable journey through the Key West National Wildlife Refuge.
Setting Sail on the Appledore Star
The sun was just beginning to rise over the Key West Historic Seaport as I stepped aboard the Appledore Star, a majestic schooner that promised a day of adventure and relaxation. The salty breeze carried the scent of the ocean, instantly reminding me of the countless hours I’ve spent riding waves and exploring the Caribbean’s hidden gems. This time, however, I was trading my surfboard for a sailboat, ready to explore the mangroves and wildlife of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge.
Captain Joe and First Mate Michael greeted us with warm smiles and a quick rundown of the day’s itinerary. With only six of us on board, it felt like a private tour, a rare treat that promised an intimate connection with the sea. As the sails were hoisted, the schooner glided smoothly over the water, the wind guiding us towards the coral reefs. Despite the breeze, the ride was gentle, and I found myself lost in the rhythm of the waves, a familiar dance that never fails to soothe my soul.
Snorkeling and Kayaking Adventures
Our first stop was the coral reef, a vibrant underwater world that beckoned us to dive in. Though I’m no stranger to the ocean, snorkeling always offers a new perspective, a chance to see the marine life up close. The crew was patient and attentive, ensuring everyone felt comfortable before we plunged into the clear waters. While the reef wasn’t teeming with life that day, the experience was exhilarating, a reminder of the ocean’s vastness and mystery.
Next, we sailed to Mule Key, where tandem ocean kayaks awaited us. Paddling around the island, we encountered a variety of birds and even a few sea turtles, their graceful movements a testament to the beauty of nature. The highlight, however, was navigating through a mangrove cave, a hidden sanctuary that felt worlds away from the bustling shores of Key West. The wind had picked up, adding a touch of challenge to our return journey, but it was a welcome workout, a chance to engage with the elements in a way that only the ocean can offer.
A Taste of Island Living
Back on the schooner, the atmosphere shifted to one of relaxation and camaraderie. Michael’s “Kick Ass” Sangria lived up to its reputation, a refreshing blend that perfectly complemented the laid-back vibe of the day. As we sailed back towards Key West, the crew served a delicious lunch of chicken salad, pulled pork sandwiches, pasta, coleslaw, and chocolate chip cookies. It was a feast that celebrated the flavors of island living, a fitting end to a day spent immersed in nature’s wonders.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experience. The Key West Sail had offered a unique blend of adventure and relaxation, a reminder of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a curious traveler, this journey through the mangroves and wildlife of Key West is one you won’t want to miss.
