- Valletta City Gate - Located within the Porta Reale Curtain, a wall between St. James’ and St. John’s Bastions, the City Gate is connected by a bridge over Valletta’s deep ditch. It marks the start of Republic Street, Valletta’s main thoroughfare leading to Fort Saint Elmo. The current gate, the fifth on this site, was completed in 2014, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.
- The New Parliament - Constructed between 2011 and 2015 as part of the City Gate Project, the New Parliament building was designed by Renzo Piano. It comprises two blocks linked by bridges, with a steel frame clad in Gozitan limestone, symbolizing honeycombs, as Malta’s name derives from Melite, meaning honey.
- Royal Opera House Site - Originally designed by English architect Edward Middleton Barry and completed in 1866, the opera house was destroyed by aerial bombing in 1942 during World War II. Once a beautiful and iconic building in Valletta, its ruins were redesigned by Renzo Piano and reopened as a performance venue in 2013.
- Il-Berġa ta’ Kastilja - Castille Palace, or Auberge de Castille, is located at Valletta’s highest point. Built in the Baroque style under Manuel Pinto da Fonseca in the 1740s, it replaced a 1574 building for knights of the Order of Saint John from Castile, León, and Portugal. Often regarded as “probably the finest building in Malta,” it now houses the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta.
- Upper Barrakka Gardens - Enjoy free time to take in the stunning view of the Grand Harbour from the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Located on the upper tier of St. Peter and Paul Bastion, built in the 1560s, the gardens were initially a recreational area for the Italian knights of the Order of Saint John. As the highest point of the city walls, the terrace offers a clear view over the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities, the shipyard, and the lower parts of the capital.
- Auberge d’Italie - Built in the late 16th century to accommodate knights of the Order of Saint John from the Italian langue, the Auberge d’Italie became the new National Art Museum (MUŻA) in 2018.
- Palazzo Parisio - Constructed in the 1740s by Domenico Sceberras, Palazzo Parisio was later owned by the Muscati and Parisio Muscati families. It served as Napoleon’s residence for six days in June 1798 during the French occupation of Malta. Purchased by the Government of Malta, it was the General Post Office from 1886 to 1973, then the Ministry for Agriculture, and now houses the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
- St. John’s Co-Cathedral - The walking tour includes 45 minutes of free time at St. John’s Co-Cathedral and Museum (entrance not included) on Republic Street.
During this time, visitors can:

• Shop along Republic Street, Valletta’s main shopping street;
• Relax at a café in Republic Square or nearby piazzas.
After 45 minutes, rejoin the group at the agreed time and place to continue the walking tour.
- St George Square - Also known as Palace Square, St. George’s Square is Valletta’s largest and most prominent square, located at the city’s heart in front of the Grandmasters’ Palace. Although its appearance has evolved since the 17th century, it remains a key venue for significant events and celebrations.
- Grand Master’s Palace - Officially known as The Palace, the Grandmaster’s Palace was constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries as the residence of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John, Malta’s ruler. It served as the seat of the Parliament of Malta from 1921 to 2015. As the largest palace in the city, it currently houses the Office of the President of Malta, the Palace State Rooms, and the Palace Armoury, which are open to the public as a museum.
- Fort St Elmo - National War Museum - Fort Saint Elmo, a star fort on the Sciberras Peninsula’s seaward shore, divides Marsamxett Harbour from Grand Harbour and controls the entrances to both harbours along with Fort Tigné and Fort Ricasoli. It is renowned for its role in the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Since 1975, part of the fort has housed the National War Museum.
- The Malta Experience - The walking tour concludes at 12:45hrs at the entrance of the Malta Experience (entrance not included). Visitors can purchase tickets to watch the 45-minute Malta Experience multilingual audio-visual show at 13:00hrs, which brings Malta’s history to life.
