The Tikal archaeological site boasts around 5,000 pre-Hispanic buildings over an area of approximately 16 km², with only 15% restored and open for exploration. The entire Tikal area spans about 576 km², much of which remains uncleared, unmapped, and unexcavated.
- Tikal Temple III - Located west of the Great Square, across the Tozzer Causeway, Temple III is currently under restoration. Only the upper sections have been cleared. A scene carved from the lintel at its peak, 55 m high, depicts a figure in an elaborate jaguar suit, believed to be the ruler Dark Sun. In front of it stands the 24th stele, marking its construction date, 810 AD.
- Temple IV - Situated to the west, overlooking the Plaza Mayor, this Mayan structure rises about 70 meters from the ground to its crest. It is the largest temple in Tikal, not only in height but also in volume, approximately 191 cubic meters, making it the largest in America.
It is believed that this complex was constructed during the reign of Yik’in Chan Ka’wil, son of Hasaw Cha’an Kawil. A significant aspect of this construction is the lintels, which recorded the wars and achievements of this ruler.
- Lost World - Mundo Perdido features 37 structures spread over 60,000 square meters. Known as the largest ceremonial complex in Tikal, it dates back to the preclassical period. The Astronomical Commemoration Complex was constructed in the Late Eb phase between 700-600 BC.
Records suggest this square was organized as an astronomical complex, consisting of a pyramid aligned with an easterly platform. These temples were used for stargazing, a method the Maya employed to track time according to their astronomical practices.
