Piazzale Michelangelo (Michelangelo Square) is a scenic square in Florence, Italy, situated in the Oltrarno district. Designed by architect Giuseppe Poggi and constructed in 1869 on a hill just south of the historic center, it was part of the Oltrarno redevelopment during Florence’s time as Italy’s capital. The city’s urban renewal, known as “Risanamento” or “Renovation,” included the creation of Lungarni (riverside walkways). On the right bank, the medieval city walls were replaced with the Viali di Circonvallazione, inspired by French boulevards, featuring six lanes and tree-lined paths. On the left bank, the Viale dei Colli, a tree-lined street over 8 kilometers long, was built, culminating at Piazzale Michelangelo, designed as a terrace with a panoramic city view.
Bronze cast of David facing Florence from the center of the square
The square, dedicated to Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo, features bronze replicas of some of his marble masterpieces found elsewhere in Florence: the David and the four allegories of the Medici Chapel of San Lorenzo. The monument was transported by nine pairs of oxen on 25 June 1873.
Poggi designed the neoclassical-style loggia that dominates the terrace, now home to a restaurant. Initially intended to house a museum of Michelangelo’s works, this plan was never realized. An epigraph in capital letters on the balcony wall under the loggia refers to his work, which Poggi transformed into his monument in 1911.
The view encompasses the heart of Florence, from Forte Belvedere to Santa Croce, across the lungarni and the bridges over the Arno, including the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, the Bargello, and the octagonal bell tower of the Badia Fiorentina. Beyond the city lie the hills of Settignano and Fiesole.
- Historic Centre of San Gimignano - The day trip takes you through the enchanting Chianti countryside, a magical landscape of cypress trees, vineyards, and olive groves reminiscent of Renaissance paintings. Guests are picked up at their hotel and driven through the Florentine countryside.
The first stop is San Gimignano, where visitors have about 30 minutes of free time. Known for its numerous towers or the many Vernaccia wine bottles, it served as a key relay point for pilgrims traveling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena. The patrician families who controlled the town constructed around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power. Although only 14 remain, San Gimignano has preserved its feudal atmosphere and appearance.
- Piazza del Campo - The tour then proceeds to the renowned Palio city, Siena, around noon. Free time is provided. Situated in the heart of Tuscany, Siena is Italy’s best-preserved medieval city and was once a prosperous, warlike independent state during the Middle Ages. Siena’s shops offer a variety of locally made items, including leather goods, neckties, fabrics, glazed terracotta, gold jewelry, and local delicacies such as Panforte, Ricciarelli, Pici, and various wines. Every Wednesday morning, a large market takes place around the Fortezza Mediceana, providing an opportunity to explore and enjoy lunch if desired.
