Initiated in 1549 by Tribolo for Duchess Eleonora di Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I de’ Medici, the garden was designed to enhance the exclusive palace in front, capturing the essence of court life. This work became a model for many other European courts. This expansive green area is a sanctuary in the heart of Florence, serving as an open-air museum filled with ancient and Renaissance statues, decorated with grottos, notably that of Bernardo Buontalenti, and large fountains, such as those of Neptune and Ocean. The subsequent Lorraine and Savoy dynasties extended its boundaries, which now stretch along the ancient city walls up to Porta Romana.
