- Walnut Canyon National Monument - Walnut Canyon boasts a rich human history. Artifacts indicate that Archaic peoples, who roamed the Southwest thousands of years ago, occasionally inhabited the canyon. Later, the first permanent residents thrived in the area from around C.E. 600 to 1400. Visitors can explore the Monument in several ways: enjoy sweeping views of Walnut Canyon and observe cliff dwellings from a distance at the visitor center’s two observation points, or take one of the two trails to get closer to the ancient dwellings. The Rim Trail is 0.7 miles and takes about 30 minutes, while the Island Trail is 1 mile and takes about an hour.
- Meteor Crater Natural Landmark - Meteor Crater, also known as Barringer Crater, is a meteorite impact site located approximately 37 miles east of Flagstaff and 18 miles west of Winslow. In the 1960s and 1970s, NASA astronauts trained in the crater to prepare for the Apollo missions to the Moon. Meteor Crater is one of the few places on Earth that is an exposed and still fully intact meteorite impact site, resembling the lunar surface. In 1984, the John Carpenter movie “Starman” featuring Jeff Bridges filmed scenes here. Visitors can also explore the Barringer Space Museum. The best way to view the crater is by walking out onto the viewing platform.
- Winslow - Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey of the Eagles wrote the song “Take It Easy” in 1972, featuring the famous line, “Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona.” In 1999, in tribute to the lyrics that brought it fame, the city of Winslow erected a life-size bronze statue and mural commemorating the song. In 2016, after Frey’s passing, a life-sized statue of him was added to the Standin’ on the Corner Park. During a stop in Winslow for lunch, visitors can seize the opportunity to take a photo at this iconic location. Also in town is the last Harvey House (La Posada Hotel), designed by Mary Colter and opened in 1930. The hotel closed in 1957 and was used by the Santa Fe Railway for offices. The railroad abandoned La Posada in 1994 and announced plans to demolish it. It was purchased, restored, and now operates as a hotel. Lunch will be at La Posada and is included in the tour fee (up to $20 per person).
