- 3 Salmon Landing - Alaskan halibut fishing involves dropping lines to depths of 200-400 feet or more, using large hooks, heavy weights, and enticing bait. As soon as your rig hits the water, the aroma of the bait begins to disperse from your location, carried by the tide. In the dim light of the deep, rockfish, cod, flounder, sharks, skates, and the mighty halibut may detect that scent and start swimming towards you.
Your guide will position you optimally to attract these fish and instruct you on how to hook them, but ultimately, it will be your hands on the rod if a bite occurs. If the rod bends, you will experience the force of a pristine ecosystem pulling back, fighting for survival, and it will be your responsibility to reel that fish in. Your guide will provide encouragement, advice, and do their best to help land the fish, but the battle is yours to win.
If you are fortunate enough to witness one of these magnificent creatures surface, it will be a highlight of any Alaskan adventure. Regardless of the conditions or the catch, this trip offers the best opportunity to introduce guests to the diverse and unique species found on the deep sea floor.

This excursion ensures every participant has a fishing rod in hand, offering a chance to catch any species attracted by the scent trail set by the guide on the seabed. It provides a personal fishing experience with 5 or 6 guests and a guide aboard a hardtop aluminum cabin cruiser on the halibut flats. While the weather can be unpredictable, a significant benefit of fishing the Inside Passage is the ability to find shelter behind an island, protecting from the open sea’s weather.
Our company prioritizes guest experience over fuel consumption. Guides are encouraged to venture where guests have the highest likelihood of experiencing active fishing. Unlike most half-day charters in Alaska, these trips take guests further into more remote and fruitful waters. This results in a greater chance of catching fish, enjoying coastal scenery, and spotting wildlife such as whales, sea lions, and porpoises!
