• Firostefani - Situated to the north of Fira, Firostefani was once a separate settlement but is now considered part of the capital. Its name translates to “The Crown of Fira” due to its location at the highest point of Fira. Firostefani offers stunning views of the capital, the sea, and the volcano. This traditional village features a few cozy restaurants, cafes, some shops, and a mini market. It also boasts some of Santorini’s most impressive hotels and traditional rooms, where visitors can enjoy a blend of tranquility and vibrant nightlife.
• Oia - Oia, frequently mentioned in travel reports, is a picturesque village on the northwest edge of Santorini island. It stretches for nearly 2km (1.2 miles) along the northern edge of the Caldera that forms Santorini, at an elevation of 70 to 100m (230 to 330 feet) above sea level. Built on the steep slope of the Caldera, its houses and restaurants are nestled into niches carved into the Caldera on the seaward side. There are 300 steps leading down to the port from Oia. The village features narrow passageways and a central square, surrounded by a complex of whitewashed, blue-domed churches and charming traditional Cycladic houses. It is perfectly positioned for breathtaking sunset views over the Caldera.
• Megalochori - Traditional Village - Megalochori is a serene traditional village in Santorini with stone cobbled streets, located 9 km southwest of Fira. The village has about 300 permanent residents. Spending an evening here is highly recommended to admire unique buildings such as neoclassical houses, stately homes, and old cave houses with solid wooden doors and high fences, once used for protection against pirates. Another highlight of Megalochori is the intricate steeples of its impressive churches, two of which are located in the village center. The village is renowned for its vineyards and wineries. There are also two secluded beaches on the Caldera side, named after local churches, Plaka and Thermi beach, accessible only by foot or boat. Visitors can enjoy traditional taverns and cafes offering local dishes under the natural shade of trees.
• Akrotiri Lighthouse - In the charming traditional village of Akrotiri, the Lighthouse of Santorini can be found. Built by a French company in 1892, it is one of Greece’s oldest lighthouses. It ceased operation during World War II but resumed in 1945 after reconstruction by the Greek Navy. The lighthouse features a square tower rising 10 meters above the warden’s house. Currently, it emits a bright white light every 20 seconds, visible up to 24 nautical miles at sea. Visitors can enjoy spectacular sea views and witness a memorable, romantic, and colorful sunset. • Προϕήτης Ηλίας - Less than five kilometers (3.1 miles) from the village of Pyrgos lies the mountain of Profitis Ilias, the island’s highest point. It stands 567 meters above sea level. At its summit is the Monastery of Profitis Ilias (or Prophet Elias), one of the island’s oldest and most significant Orthodox landmarks. Founded in 1711 by monks Gabriel and Ioakeim, it was constructed in the style of a fortress. From 1806 to 1845, it operated a school where Greek language and literature were key subjects. Today, the Monastery houses a museum with a collection of rare ecclesiastical books, Byzantine icons, and sculptures. This peaceful and quiet place often encourages visitors to linger. The chapel and its impressive gardens, surrounded by flowers and trees, including over 700 olive trees, offer breathtaking panoramic views.
