The highlight here is Fagaras Fortress, uniquely surrounded by a moat in Romania. In the early 1600s, it served as the princely residence of Michael the Brave. From 1948 to 1960, the castle functioned as a prison. “The Iron Lady,” a medieval torture device, was discovered in one of its towers. Today, the castle houses the Fagaras Country Museum, dedicated to local history, and the municipal library.
- Le Lac Balea - The tour proceeds across the Land of Fagaras, following the alpine road through the Fagaras Mountains, Romania’s highest range with Moldoveanu peak at 2,544 meters. From Cartisoara Village, the tour takes the Transfagarasan road along Balea Valley, stopping near the glacial Balea Lake to enjoy the stunning scenery.
- Vidraru Dam - The tour continues through Romania’s longest road tunnel (887 meters) to reach Vidraru Dam and Vidraru Lake.
- Poienari Castle - Next, the tour visits the ruins of Poienari Castle. Legend has it that in 1462, Vlad Tepes, pursued and cornered by Mehmet II “al Fatih’s” army, retreated with some soldiers to Poienari fortress. Visitors must climb over 1,450 steps on foot to reach Poienari Fortress.
