Journey Through the Middle Atlas Mountains

The journey began in the bustling city of Fes, where I was picked up by our guide, Youssef Zrwal, a man whose reputation preceded him. As a wildlife photographer, I have always been drawn to the raw beauty of nature, and the Middle Atlas Mountains did not disappoint. The drive through Ifrane, often referred to as “Little Switzerland,” was a delightful surprise. The crisp air and the sight of Barbary monkeys in the cedar forests of Azrou were a photographer’s dream.

The night spent in the desert camp was equally enchanting. Under a canopy of stars, we gathered around a campfire, where the camp staff played traditional drums and shared stories of their Berber heritage. It was a night of cultural exchange, laughter, and newfound friendships. As I lay in my tent, the silence of the desert enveloped me, a stark contrast to the bustling cities I had left behind.

Discovering Hidden Gems

The journey continued through the Todra and Dades Gorges, where towering cliffs and winding roads offered breathtaking views. Youssef’s expertise shone as he guided us through these natural wonders, stopping at hidden spots to capture the perfect photograph. His willingness to tailor the tour to our interests, such as exploring fossilized turtles and wildflowers, made the experience truly unique.

Our final stop was the ancient Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through its narrow alleys, I could almost hear the echoes of history whispering through the walls. The drive through the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech was a fitting end to the journey, with its dramatic landscapes and charming Berber villages.
