Volubilis - Embark on a day trip from Fez to Volubilis and Meknes, beginning early in the morning at a prearranged time. The journey starts by meeting the driver in the lobby of your accommodation. The drive to Meknes and Volubilis is truly captivating.
Upon arrival at Volubilis, a local guide will greet the group. The guide will enthusiastically share the rich historical facts surrounding these ruins, which are recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Dating back to the 5th century BC, some of the original mosaics remain remarkably well-preserved. This site stands as a testament to the illustrious past of the Roman Empire in Morocco, filled with enchanting stories from Roman times, which the guide will passionately recount. The visit includes the Moulay Idriss Mausoleum, dedicated to the first Sultan of Morocco and the Maghreb. The village’s stunning Andalusian architecture tells silent tales of the region’s glorious past.
The trip also covers Meknes, often referred to as the younger sibling of Fez. This city was the first capital of the current dynasty under Moulay Ismail’s reign. It is renowned for its 40 km long city walls, which protect Morocco’s most beautiful gate: Bab Al Mansour. A Christian Portuguese captive constructed it as a condition for his freedom after being captured while fighting against the Sultan’s corsairs. The walls, over 1.5 meters thick, were designed to withstand cannon attacks from rebellious tribes and foreign powers aiming to seize control of Morocco. After lunch, the tour includes visits to the Royal Stables, which once housed up to 12,000 horses of Sultan Moulay Ismail, the granaries, and Lahdim Square. The road trip concludes in the old medina of Meknes. The professional driver will then return the group to their accommodation in Fez.
Don’t miss the chance to explore one of the pillars of Morocco’s remarkable history. Join this incredible trip to Volubilis, Moulay Idriss, and Meknes, and create unforgettable memories of Morocco.
