In AD 324, Emperor Constantine the Great chose to reestablish Byzantium as Nova Roma (New Rome) following his triumph at the nearby Battle of Chrysopolis. Despite this, the name did not gain popularity, and the city was soon renamed Constantinople, the City of Constantine. Constantine significantly expanded the city, with one of his major projects being the renovation of the Hippodrome. It is estimated that Constantine’s Hippodrome measured approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) in length and 130 m (427 ft) in width.
