- Faros Armenistis - Built in 1891, the Armenistis Lighthouse stands as a silent tribute to Mykonos island’s rich maritime history while still being fully operational today.
Located in the north-western part of the island, in the Fanari area, approximately 6.5 kilometers from Mykonos town along the north coast road, the lighthouse offers a stunning view of the sparkling blue waters between Mykonos and the nearby island of Tinos. Its strategic location provides breathtaking views of the surrounding areas, making it a must-visit to appreciate the island’s captivating history and natural beauty.
The decision to construct the Armenistis Lighthouse was made following the sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887 off the island’s north coast, which resulted in the loss of eleven lives. To prevent such tragedies, the 19-meter-tall lighthouse was erected by 1891, serving as a guiding beacon for incoming ships.
- Agios Sostis - Agios Sostis in Mykonos is one of the island’s quietest beaches due to its distance from the bustling southern beaches. It is an untouched area without amenities, offering visitors a sense of complete freedom. The sandy beach stretches for about 250 meters.
Its secluded location makes it a favorite among nudists. For those interested in skinny-dipping, it is the perfect spot!
- Ftelia Beach - Ftelia in Mykonos is a stunning, north-facing beach. It is influenced by the Meltemi (the Cycladic wind from the north) and is particularly popular with windsurfers.
The beach features sandy shores and turquoise waters, offering a peaceful and uncrowded environment, which is surprising given its accessibility from Chora. A beach bar at the edge provides seating under umbrellas.
Additionally, the beach is renowned for its nearby Neolithic settlement. It is believed that Ajax the Lesser, one of the main heroes of Homer’s Iliad, was buried there. Ftelia cannot be reached by bus, so private transportation is necessary to visit this beautiful secluded beach.
- Fokos Beach - With a wild landscape on a rocky bay in the island’s northern part, Fokos Beach is one of Mykonos’ “hidden beaches,” free from crowds. It is faced by a taverna but is usually nearly deserted, with only a few sunbathers. However, it is a popular spot for horseback riding, so don’t be surprised to see horses heading towards the beach.
If searching for tranquil, undeveloped beaches in Mykonos, Fokos is the place. It feels remote, despite being close to Mykonos Town. Fokos is accessible only by private means after a turn in Ano Mera, located just after the artificial lake of Marathi, which supplies the island with fresh water.
- Merchia Beach - Merchia Beach in Mykonos is situated in the northeast part of the island, 8 km from Ano Mera Village. The beach is nestled in a small bay and is ideal for travelers seeking an alternative side of Mykonos.
Merchia Beach features a small, sandy coast with a few pebbles and clear blue waters, surrounded by minimal vegetation and a few picturesque houses mainly owned by fishermen. There are no umbrellas or sunbeds, but some salt cedars provide shade if you haven’t brought your own, especially during hot summer days. As the area is secluded with no nearby taverns, restaurants, or snack bars, it is advisable to bring water and food. Access to Merchia is somewhat challenging due to a dirt road, but it is well worth the effort.
Moreover, a short distance from the beach is the small chapel of Saint Nicholas, built on the rocks by the sea.
- Monastery of Panayia Tourliani - The Monastery of Panagia Tourliani in Mykonos is located 8 km from the town, in Ano Mera village. It was established in 1542 by two priests and named after the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The monastery was restored in 1767 and received its current name from an icon of the Virgin Mary found in the nearby Tourlos area. Since then, Panagia Tourliani has been the island’s patron and celebrates on August 15th.
The building’s architecture is impressive, with a whitewashed exterior and a colored dome. A beautiful marble fountain is situated in the yard outside the church. Inside, there is an impressive wooden iconostasis (altar screen) crafted in 1775 by Florentine artists, depicting icons of apostles and saints, as well as scenes from the New Testament.
The monastery also houses a small ecclesiastical museum featuring wood carvings, embroideries, vestments, holy icons, and the monastery’s first bells.
- Ano Mera - Ano Mera in Mykonos is the second-largest village after Chora (the main town) and is one of the island’s oldest villages. It offers several hotels and rooms and studios for rent. It is a peaceful village where locals continue their daily lives without the interruption of tourist crowds, unlike the capital.
Ano Mera also features some taverns along its main square, where visitors can enjoy traditional dishes at reasonable prices. Cafes and pastry shops are also located around the square.
