• Ria Formosa Natural Park - Situated in the Algarve, southern Portugal, the Ria Formosa lagoon is a series of barrier islands connected to the sea by six inlets. Five of these are natural with dynamic characteristics, while the sixth is an artificial inlet created to facilitate access to the port of Faro. The Ria Formosa system accommodates diverse and sometimes conflicting uses. While part of it is a Natural Park, it also significantly contributes to the local economy. Besides tourism, it supports economic activities such as seafood farming, including grooved carpet shell harvesting, and the port of Faro. Spanning over 170 km², the Ria Formosa is a designated Natural Park and a crucial stopover for hundreds of bird species during their spring and autumn migrations.
