Setting Sail on the Don Innovation

The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I made my way to the dock in Fajardo, ready to embark on a snorkeling adventure that promised to reveal a local’s secret spot. The legendary Don Innovation, the oldest running USCG-inspected vessel in Puerto Rico, awaited me and a group of eager explorers. With a capacity of 20, our group was a lively mix of families and friends, all excited to experience the beauty of Ceiba’s captivating coast.

As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but there’s always something thrilling about setting sail on a new adventure. The gentle breeze and the promise of the Caribbean Sea’s tranquility set the perfect tone for the day. Captain Joe, along with crew members Sid Marie and Ariana, welcomed us aboard with warm smiles and a sense of camaraderie that instantly made us feel at home.

Discovering the Reef

Our first stop was a snorkeling reef, a vibrant underwater world teeming with life. Sid Marie led the more experienced snorkelers on a tour of the reef, while Ariana stayed close to the boat, assisting those who were new to the experience. The water was crystal clear, and the reef was alive with colorful fish darting in and out of the coral.

I joined Sid Marie’s group, eager to explore the depths and see what secrets the reef held. As we swam, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the ocean, a feeling that never fades no matter how many times I dive beneath the waves. The reef was a kaleidoscope of colors, with schools of fish moving in perfect harmony, and the occasional stingray gliding gracefully by.

A Beachside Retreat

After our snorkeling adventure, we set sail for Icacos Island, where we dropped anchor on a remote beach. The crew served us a delightful spread of chicken salad and PB&J sandwiches, along with unlimited waters, soft drinks, and rum cocktails. It was the perfect beachside picnic, and the relaxed atmosphere was infectious.

Many of us took the opportunity to explore the island, while others continued snorkeling off the beach, spotting large stingrays in the shallows. The crew rolled out a big swimming pad, and the kids in our group had a blast playing on it, their laughter echoing across the water.

The only hiccup in our day was the slippery deck of the boat, which caused a few of us to take an unexpected tumble. But even that couldn’t dampen our spirits. The crew’s attentiveness and the beauty of the surroundings made for an unforgettable experience.

As we sailed back to Fajardo, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures. The Don Innovation had taken us on a journey that was both thrilling and serene, a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation.
