Constructing the renowned 4-foot silver thread that winds through 800 miles of Alaskan wilderness required 70,000 workers and an $8 billion investment. It traverses mountain ranges, earthquake zones, permafrost, and rivers to deliver oil to the nation’s refineries. Approximately 420 miles of the pipeline are elevated, with 554 animal crossings, and it can be viewed just outside Fairbanks. As you observe, consider that over a million dollars’ worth of oil flows through it every hour.
- James Dalton Highway - From Fairbanks, the Elliot Highway leads about 73 miles north to the start of the Dalton Highway, passing through boreal forest hills of birch and aspen trees and tundra valleys with streams and small rivers. The route crosses the mighty Yukon River and continues to Finger Mountain, a treeless high point with short walkways and kiosks providing information about the region’s geology and alpine tundra. The Arctic Circle turnout offers restrooms and a picnic area.
- Yukon River Camp - There will be two stops at Yukon River Camp. The first stop is for fuel and restrooms on the northbound journey. The second stop is for dinner on the return trip from the Arctic Circle. This camp is ideally located at the Yukon River Bridge at Mile 56 Dalton Highway. The winter menu at the Yukon River Noodle House features freshly made Bahn Mi sandwiches and hearty noodle soups.
- BLM Arctic Circle Monument Sign - Situated at 66º33’, the Arctic Circle marks the spot where the sun does not set on June 21 and does not rise on December 21. Your guide will celebrate this crossing with you and present you with an official Arctic Circle Certificate.
