Riding the Waves: A Thrilling Day in the Exuma Cays

When the opportunity to explore the Exuma Cays on a powerboat presented itself, I couldn’t resist. With the promise of iguanas, sunken planes, and swimming pigs, this adventure was calling my name.

Setting Sail on the Jalapeno

The sun was just beginning to rise over the Exuma Cays as I found myself boarding the Jalapeno, a sleek powerboat that promised a day of adventure and exploration. Captain Winston, along with his crew Joey and Disco, greeted us with warm smiles and a playlist that spanned decades and genres, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves, but there’s something uniquely exhilarating about skimming across the ocean at high speed, the wind whipping through your hair, and the promise of discovery just over the horizon.

Our first stop was Allen Cay, home to the Bahamian Rock Iguanas. Scampering across the beach with these prehistoric creatures was a surreal experience. These iguanas, found only in the Exumas, seemed to embody the spirit of the islands—wild, free, and utterly captivating. As I watched them bask in the sun, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to this place, a reminder of why I chose to make the Caribbean my home.

Diving into History and Adventure

Next, we made our way to Norman’s Cay, where the infamous sunken plane of Pablo Escobar lies beneath the crystal-clear waters. Snorkeling around the wreck was like diving into a piece of history, the remnants of a bygone era now teeming with vibrant marine life. The water was warm and inviting, and as I floated above the wreckage, I marveled at the resilience of nature, reclaiming and transforming what was once a symbol of chaos into a thriving underwater ecosystem.

From there, we headed to Compass Cay, where the nurse sharks awaited. These gentle giants, often misunderstood, swam gracefully around us as we waded into the water. It was a humbling experience, being so close to these magnificent creatures, and I couldn’t resist capturing the moment with a few photos. The thrill of swimming alongside them was matched only by the serenity of the surroundings, a perfect balance of excitement and tranquility.

A Feast for the Senses

As the day continued, we stopped for lunch on Great Exuma, where a Bahamian-style buffet awaited us. The flavors were as vibrant as the island itself, a delicious reminder of the rich culture and history that permeates every corner of the Bahamas. With a cold drink in hand and the sun warming my skin, I took a moment to soak it all in—the laughter of my fellow travelers, the gentle lapping of the waves, and the undeniable beauty of the Exumas.

Our final stop was Pig Beach, where the famous swimming pigs greeted us with their playful antics. Feeding and swimming with these charismatic creatures was a delightful end to an unforgettable day. As we made our way back to Paradise Island, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the water. It was a fitting conclusion to a day filled with adventure, laughter, and a renewed appreciation for the natural wonders of the Caribbean.

The Exuma Cays Tour was more than just a day trip; it was a journey into the heart of the Bahamas, a reminder of the beauty and magic that lies just beyond the horizon. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, this tour is a must-do, a chance to experience the islands in all their glory.
