A Day of Discovery at Howletts Wildlife Park
Our family has always been drawn to experiences that blend education with entertainment, and Howletts Wildlife Park near Canterbury offered just that. As a museum curator, I am constantly seeking out opportunities to engage my children with the wonders of the natural world, and Howletts promised a day filled with learning and adventure.
Upon arrival, we were immediately struck by the park’s commitment to conservation. The sprawling 90-acre parkland is home to a diverse array of animals, each with their own story of survival and preservation. Our first stop was the African Painted Dogs, a species that has long fascinated us. We had booked a special “meet the painted dogs” experience, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. Jess, the keeper, shared her extensive knowledge with us, captivating both adults and children alike. Her passion for these animals was infectious, and we left with a newfound appreciation for the conservation efforts that are so vital to their survival.
Exploring the Wonders of Wildlife
The rest of the park was a treasure trove of wildlife encounters. We wandered through the beautifully maintained grounds, encountering lions, tigers, elephants, and gorillas along the way. Each animal seemed to have its own personality, and while some were more elusive, others were happy to engage with their surroundings. The park’s design allows for intimate viewing experiences without compromising the animals’ comfort, a balance that is often difficult to achieve.
Our children were particularly enchanted by the gorillas, watching them interact with one another in their spacious habitat. The play area provided a welcome break for our little ones, allowing them to burn off some energy while we took a moment to relax. The park’s facilities were excellent, with clean restrooms and a delightful café where we enjoyed a coffee break with a view of the elephants.
