The Danakil Depression was created by the continental drift of the African and Asian tectonic plates. As these plates gradually moved apart at a pace of 1-2 cm annually, they left behind a geological depression known as the Danakil Depression, or Afar Depression.

The Danakil Depression was created by the continental drift of the African and Asian tectonic plates. As these plates gradually moved apart at a pace of 1-2 cm annually, they left behind a geological depression known as the Danakil Depression, or Afar Depression.
This depression is located at the triple junction of three tectonic plates.
The Afar Depression extends across Djibouti, Eritrea, and the Afar region of Ethiopia. The northern section of this depression is the Danakil Depression, which lies over 100 meters below sea level and features some of the planet’s most otherworldly landscapes.
In addition to its intriguing geology, the Danakil Depression offers insights into some of biology’s most significant questions. In 1974, scientists discovered the remains of ‘Lucy’ in the Danakil Depression, an early ancestor of modern humans dating back 3.2 million years, now exhibited at the National Museum in Addis Ababa.
