Essaouira - Embark on a day trip to Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, situated on a rocky peninsula. The city is renowned for its ramparts overlooking the ocean, its medina adorned in white and blue hues, its bustling port, and its expansive sandy beaches.
Essaouira’s history stretches back to the 8th century BC when the Phoenicians made a stop here on their journey along the equator. The true founder of the city was the Alaouite Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah, who commissioned Theodore Cornut, an architect and student of Vauban, to construct it. Today, Essaouira is a charming and lively fishing port, especially vibrant when boats arrive to auction off sardines and crustaceans. On the docks, fishermen can be seen mending their red nets.
Savor grilled sardines outdoors at the harbor’s quaint restaurants, then explore the Sqala du Port, a crenellated bastion built to safeguard the harbor and the city. It features two fortified wings behind the Navy gate. Upon leaving the port Sqala, step into Moulay Hassan square.
