- Parco Archeologico di Ercolano - A professional driver is available to provide transportation and share valuable insights from years of experience, ensuring a memorable tour! Traveling along the scenic SS. 145, which skirts Castellammare di Stabia, visitors can explore the excavations of Herculaneum. Like Pompeii, Herculaneum was destroyed during the eruption of 79 AD. During the eruption, it was engulfed by a torrent of mud and lava, surrounded by the villas of Roman patricians. The debris that covered Herculaneum eventually solidified into tuff, preserving objects and wooden structures that remain visible and well-preserved today. However, much of the ancient city remains buried beneath modern Herculaneum, with ongoing excavation efforts to uncover what lies beneath. Often considered the smaller sister of Pompeii, it is a destination for beauty enthusiasts. Visitors to the ancient city have the unique opportunity to see perfectly intact patrician villas. It is a preservation marvel where even the wood and strings of the 2000-year-old city are displayed, alongside stunning brickwork, mosaics, and frescoes. The level of preservation in Herculaneum is extraordinary, given the destructive 500 °C volcanic flows that devastated the city.
The entrance fee to the Herculaneum archaeological site is 11 euros.
