During the eruption, it was engulfed by a torrent of mud and lava, surrounded by the villas of Roman patricians. The debris that covered Herculaneum eventually solidified into tuff, preserving objects and wooden structures that remain visible and well-preserved today. However, much of the ancient city remains buried beneath modern Herculaneum, with ongoing excavation efforts to uncover what lies beneath. Often considered the smaller sister of Pompeii, it is a destination for beauty enthusiasts. Visitors to the ancient city have the unique opportunity to see perfectly intact patrician villas.
