As the sun rose over Kampala, I found myself filled with anticipation for the adventure that lay ahead. The journey to Kitgum, a small town en route to Kidepo Valley National Park, was a long one, but the promise of what awaited made every mile worth it. The drive, though lengthy, was a visual feast of Uganda’s diverse landscapes, from bustling cityscapes to serene rural vistas. Each turn of the road seemed to unveil a new facet of this beautiful country.
Upon reaching Kitgum, the sense of excitement only grew. The overnight stay was a welcome respite, allowing me to recharge for the next leg of the journey. The local hospitality was warm and genuine, a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of Uganda. The following morning, after a hearty breakfast, we continued our journey to Kidepo Valley National Park. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the Lorokul cultural group, who offered us a glimpse into the ancient traditions of the Karamajong people.
Visiting the traditional homesteads was like stepping back in time. The Karamajong’s way of life, deeply connected to the land, was both fascinating and humbling. We sampled local dishes, each bite a new experience, and listened to stories passed down through generations.
