Bwindi offers travelers an extraordinary and distinctive opportunity to observe mountain gorillas, with the park hosting 35 known gorilla groups, of which 17 are habituated for research and tourism. With a rich forest history spanning over 25,000 years, the park is renowned for its species diversity. It is home to over 120 mammal species, including chimpanzees, blue monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and mountain gorillas. Additionally, there are 357 bird species, featuring 23 Albertine Rift Valley endemics like the short-tailed warbler, African green broadbill, and blue-headed sunbird, among others. The park also boasts 220 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos, and numerous other endangered species. Botanically, Bwindi is one of the most diverse forests in Eastern Africa, with over 1,000 flowering plants, including 163 tree species and 104 fern species. Travelers will also have the opportunity to meet the world’s shortest Pygmies and experience their fascinating traditional lifestyle, which is not to be missed.
