- Wadi El Natrun - The valley of Wadi El-Rayan spans an area of 1,759 km², with 113 km² occupied by the prominent water bodies of the Wadi El Rayan lakes. Situated approximately 65 km southwest of Faiyum city and 80 km west of the Nile River, the Wadi has been utilized for creating man-made lakes from agricultural drainage, forming the two distinct Wadi El Rayan Lakes. The reserve includes a 50.90 km² upper lake and a 62.00 km² lower lake, connected by waterfalls. Among the springs, there are three sulfur springs on the southern side of the lower lake, accompanied by extensive mobile sand dunes. The Wadi El Rayan Waterfalls are recognized as the largest in Egypt.
To the south and southeast of the springs lies Gabal Manqueer Al Rayan, where marine fossils and archaeological remains can be found. Gabal Madwera, near the lower lake, is noted for its extensive dune formations.
In the northwest is Wadi El Hitan, a protected area containing fossils of extinct whales.
- Valley of the Whales (Wadi Al-Hitan) - The Valley of the Whales is a renowned paleontological site in the Faiyum Governorate of Egypt, located about 150 kilometers (93 miles) southwest of Cairo. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2005 due to its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest forms of whales, the archaeoceti (a now extinct sub-order of whales). The site provides crucial evidence for understanding one of the greatest mysteries of whale evolution: the transition of whales from land-based animals to ocean-going mammals. No other location in the world offers the same number, concentration, and quality of such fossils, along with their accessibility and setting in a beautiful and protected landscape. This is why UNESCO added it to the list of protected World Heritage Sites.
- Fayoum Oasis - The Faiyum Oasis is a depression or basin in the desert just west of the Nile, south of Cairo in Egypt. The basin area is estimated to be between 1,270 km² (490 mi²) and 1,700 km² (656 mi²). The basin floor consists of fields irrigated by a channel of the Nile, the Bahr Yussef, which drains into a desert hollow west of the Nile Valley. The Bahr Yussef turns west through a narrow land neck north of Ihnasya, between the archaeological sites of El Lahun and Gurob near Hawara; it then branches out, providing fertile agricultural land in the Faiyum basin, draining into the large saltwater Lake Moeris (Birket Qarun). The lake, which was freshwater in prehistoric times, is now a saltwater lake and serves as a source of tilapia and other fish for the local area.
