Amphitheater of El Jem, Matmata, and Ksar Ghilane
Amphitheater of El Jem - The Amphitheater of El Jem stands as a remarkable example of Roman architecture, particularly in the realm of entertainment structures, in Africa. Situated on a plain in central Tunisia, this amphitheater, constructed entirely of freestone, is unique in that it is neither carved into nor supported by a hill. It follows the model of the Colosseum in Rome, yet it is not a mere replica of the Flavian structure. With dimensions of 148 meters on the major axis and 122 meters on the minor axis, and a capacity estimated at 35,000 spectators, it is undoubtedly among the largest amphitheaters worldwide.
Troglodyte Houses of Matmata - The city of Matmata is located in southeastern Tunisia, specifically to the west of Gabès. This ancient Berber village sprawls across the hills, blending with the rocky landscapes, offering a panoramic view from the mountain top, and concealing one of Tunisia’s unique sites. The village’s homes, known as troglodyte houses, showcase the beauty of underground dwellings in Matmata. These homes are situated in underground pits resembling caves, with each pit (الحوش) taking a circular shape and featuring a courtyard adorned with designs and colors, along with other rooms made of smooth mud. History enthusiasts are encouraged to visit this charming village, which attracts tourists from around the globe on daily tours to experience underground life and learn about the local customs and traditions.
Ksar Ghilane - Ksar Ghilane is an oasis in southern Tunisia, located on the eastern edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, known as the southernmost of the Tunisian oases and one of the gateways to the Tunisian Sahara desert. A hot water source emerges in the oasis, often suitable for bathing, and is believed to have thermal benefits. Visitors can enjoy a stunning Sahara sunset and take advantage of the Sahara desert with a quad trip on the sand dunes, a camel ride (included in the offer), and a swim in the thermal basin of Ksar Ghilane (included in the offer).
Tataouine, Ksar Ouled Soltane, Chenini, and The Island of Djerba
Tataouine - Tataouine, a governorate in southern Tunisia, is a significant tourist destination due to its rich archaeological and heritage reserves, as well as its environmental and ecological diversity. Tataouine is notable for the homogeneity of its Berber, Berber, and Arab population.
Ksar Ouled Soltane - Situated about 20 km south of Tataouine in southern Tunisia, Ksar Ouled Soltane is a well-preserved fortified granary built by the Berbers in the 15th century. Constructed with adobe (raw earth), the ksar spans two courtyards, each featuring vaulted granaries serving as food reserves, known as ghorfas. Historically, granaries were often fortified to deter looters from raiding village food supplies. Like other granaries built by Berber communities in North Africa, Ksar Ouled Soltane is located on a hill, providing protection from such raids.
Chenini Berber Village - Chenini, a Berber-speaking Jewish village in southern Tunisia, is located 18 kilometers from Tataouine. Established by Berbers and mixed Arabs in a mountainous area, it is perched atop a hill. Its oldest structures date back to the 12th century. The village is spread over three levels, topped by the Chenni Palace, a ruined castle likely used for storing crops such as oil, cereals, and spices. Some buildings are still used by villagers in the valley to store cereals.
Mosque of the Seven Sleepers - The legend of the Seven Sleepers inspires great devotion in southern Tunisia: the seven saints are venerated in a cave in El Oudiane, in a partially troglodyte mosque in Chenini, and in an old cemetery in Midès. It is probable that these sites were visited in pre-Islamic times, likely dedicated to other cults, and that after the region’s Islamization, the predominantly Ibadi local populations continued the worship at these shrines. Over time, the Seven Sleepers became the focus of worship. Among the explanations are the continuation of the seven-year cults or the particular memory left in the collective memory and toponymy of the sovereign warrior Decius.
Djerba Island - Djerba is an island off the Tunisian coast, renowned for its Mediterranean beaches and white desert towns influenced by Berber, Arab, Jewish, and African cultures. Its main city, Houmt Souk, is famous for its artisanal markets, fishing port, and 16th-century fortress, Borj el Kebir. To the south lies the El Ghriba Synagogue, a pilgrimage site for North African Jews.
