Safi - Safi is a coastal port city in Morocco. The waterfront features Ksar El Bahr, a 16th-century fortress constructed by Portuguese colonizers. In the old town, Rue du Souq is lined with food and craft stalls. Nearby, the National Museum of Ceramics, housed in another Portuguese-built fort, showcases local pottery crafted in the Colline des Potiers workshops.
Cooperative Marjana (ARGAN OIL) - The Marjana cooperative specializes in producing Argan oil and a variety of cosmetic and food products derived from Argan. Nestled in the argan and cedar forest, the cooperative occupies a one-hectare plot surrounded by argan and carob trees. Established in 2005 as part of a national program for the socio-economic development of rural women, visiting and purchasing products from the Marjana cooperative is vital for the success of this women’s initiative.
Essaouira to Casablanca
Essaouira - Essaouira is a port city and resort on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Its medina (old town) is safeguarded by 18th-century seafront ramparts known as the Skala de la Kasbah, designed by European engineers. The walls are lined with old brass cannons, offering ocean views. The strong “Alizée” trade winds make the city’s crescent beach a favorite for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.
Medina of Essaouira - Essaouira’s history dates back to the 8th century BC when the Phoenicians stopped there on their equatorial route. The city’s true founder was the Alaouite sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah, who commissioned Theodore Cornut, an architect and student of Vauban, to construct it. Today, Essaouira is a charming fishing port bustling with activity as boats arrive, selling sardines and crustaceans at auction. Fishermen can be seen mending red nets on the docks.
Essaouira Fishing Port - Known as the “Port of Timbuktu,” this port was a hub for exporting African products, including slaves (children of Bambara, in gnaoua mythology). Sultan Ben Abdellah encouraged free trade by reducing customs and inviting wealthy merchants and Jews to manage trade with Christians. A quarter for foreign merchants was also established.
By 1780, the port managed nearly half of Morocco’s international trade. Exports included ostrich feathers, almonds, gum arabic, ivory, and dried camel skins (imported from sub-Saharan Africa via caravan trade), while the British imported Manchester cotton and tea.
Skala Du Port - Relish grilled sardines at the harbor’s small restaurants, then explore the Sqala du Port, a crenellated bastion built to defend the harbor and city. It features two fortified wings behind the Navy gate. Upon leaving the port Sqala, enter Moulay Hassan square. Discover the kasbah, a district encircled by ramparts with foundations anchored in the rock. Stroll along the ramparts, taking the street leading to the Sqala of the Kasbah, where Essaouira’s famous cannons are lined up. This location was chosen by Orson Welles for the exterior scenes of his film Othello.
