- La Leona Petrified Forest - This tour is perfect for those who love the outdoors and adventure, eager to explore new places. A moderate level of fitness is necessary as the tour includes a 3-hour hike. The journey begins in El Calafate, traveling via Provincial Route N°5 and then National Route 40. The tour reaches The Argentino Lake, the Santa Cruz River, and the stunning La Leona River valley, offering breathtaking views of the Andes, including Cerro Fitz Roy. Visitors will explore the historic Hotel La Leona site and continue 10 km along Lake Viedma’s southern shore to Cerro Los Hornos (Estancia Santa Teresita). The exploration of the Petrified Forest begins here, with a walk through the Great Depression among fossils. A lunch break is taken midway. Throughout the walk, numerous petrified logs can be seen on the surface, some with a diameter of 1.20 meters, serving as evidence of ancient times when the climate supported abundant and large flora.

We embark on our journey from Calafate early in the morning. Next, we travel approximately 30 km eastwards and follow the Legendary Route 40. Much of our journey will run alongside Lake Argentino’s eastern edge and the banks of the Santa Cruz River. Later, we will encounter La Leona River, which lends its name to the inn and hotel at the La Estela ranch. Here we’ll pause to delve deeper into the history of La Leona parador and hotel. Visitors are welcome to indulge in a warm beverage accompanied by homemade pastries.
We then set out for El Chaltén, after a tour of the Chorrillo del Salto located 4 km from the town and a meal at La Tapera. A 45-minute moderate hike brings us to the Mirador de los Cóndores, a vantage point that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges, the Las Vueltas river valley, and the town of El Chaltén.
