PUMA PUNKU (Tiwanaku) / LAKE TITICACA “The Route of the Gods”

Puma Punku - TIWANAKU:

Recognized as one of the most ancient civilizations in the Andes (1600 BC – 1200 AD), it was distinguished by its advancements in culture, architecture, and agriculture. It also made significant strides in fields such as astronomy and religion. This remarkable civilization thrived for approximately 3,000 years, becoming the most prominent population center of its era in South America.

Kalasasaya - THE KALASASAYA TEMPLE

The “Temple of the Standing Stones” spans about 2 hectares, constructed with sandstone columns and cut ashlars, featuring drainage channels for rainwater. Kalasasaya houses three notable sculptures: Stela 8 (Ponce), the El Fraile monolith, and the Puerta del Sol. The Ponce Monolith is adorned with intricate iconographic engravings, including winged figures, fish, and heads of pumas and camelids.

Akapana - THE AKAPANA PYRAMID

Measuring 194 meters in length and 182 meters in width, with a perimeter of 800 meters and a height of 18 meters, it comprises seven stepped terraces supported by distinct retaining walls for each level, indicating an extended construction period. These terraces are divided by carved sandstone walls filled with sediment and compacted.

Tiwanaku - THE SEMI-SUBTERRANEAN TEMPLE

This is one of Tiwanaku’s most exquisite architectural achievements, constructed in the early centuries of the Christian era. It features a slightly rectangular layout, with four retaining walls surrounding an open courtyard. The west side measures 28.47 meters, the east side 28.57 meters, the north side 26 meters, and the south side 26.05 meters. The north wall’s façade has 14 vertically planted monolithic pillars: 11 on the east side, 15 on the west side, and 9 on the south side. The walls are adorned with 175 protruding human heads of various designs, sculpted in whitish stones, particularly limestone and ignimbrite.

Puma Punku - THE PUMA PUNKU TEMPLE “ALIEN CULTURE” ???

Lake Titicaca - EL LAGO TITICACA

It is the highest navigable lake in the world, situated in the Altiplano of the central Andes, with an average elevation of 3812 meters above sea level. It covers an area of 8562 km², with 56% (4772 km²) belonging to Peru and 44% (3790 km²) to Bolivia, and a maximum depth estimated at 281 meters.

Lake Titicaca - REED RAFTS:

The residents of Suriki Island and the town of Huatajata maintain the tradition of constructing reed rafts. Reeds are plants that grow along the shores of Lake Titicaca, similar to the papyrus of Egypt. Historically, these rafts were used for navigating Titicaca. Today, they are used for delightful tourist excursions.

Mercado de Las Brujas - WITCHES’ STREET:

Provides insight into tradition, native products, medicinal plants, amulets, offerings, and herbs. Visitors can also find healers, yatiris, and kallawayas (Andean witches and healers). It also boasts a beautiful artisan market, featuring Bolivian and international products.

Plaza Murillo - MURILLO SQUARE

Located in the heart of La Paz, its original name was Plaza Mayor. It was later known as Plaza de Armas. In 1825, Plaza de Armas was renamed Plaza 16 de Julio. Eventually, the square was named Plaza Murillo in honor of Don Pedro Domingo Murillo for his role in the uprising of July 16, 1809.

Salar de UYUNI

Uyuni - UYUNI TOWN:

A Bolivian city and municipality situated in southwestern Bolivia in the Department of Potosí. The origin of the name is somewhat unclear; some suggest it derives from the Aymara word “Uyu,” meaning a gathering point. The suffix “Ni” means place, so together they translate to “gathering place.” On July 7, 1983, the city of Uyuni was declared Bolivia’s Favorite Daughter.

Train Cemetery - TRAIN GRAVEYARD:

Located near the town of Uyuni, featuring trains and cars from the 19th century, open to the public for exploration and photography. Locomotive and car skeletons are scattered across the plateau. Engines taken for repair near Uyuni Station, the country’s first, never returned to the rails or emitted smoke from their chimneys. Today, rust colors the worn parts of what is known as the Graveyard of Forgotten Trains.

Colchani - COLCHANI:

This town is within the Uyuni Municipality, Potosi Department, Bolivia. It is 20 km from Uyuni on the highway connecting it to Oruro. Situated at 3,674 meters above sea level, Colchani is the gateway to the Uyuni salt flats. It features a salt museum popular with tourists and artisan markets where visitors can purchase salt-made souvenirs.

Salar de Uyuni - LAR DE UYUNI:

The largest continuous and high-altitude salt desert in the world, covering an area of 10,582 km². It is located at about 3650 meters above sea level in southwestern Bolivia, in the Potosí department, within the Andean highland region. Salar de Uyuni holds the largest lithium reserve globally, with 50-70% of the world’s lithium, and also contains significant amounts of potassium, boron, and magnesium.
