During the Mongol invasion in 1241, the Bishop of Eger relocated to a rocky hill in Eger, where a new castle was swiftly constructed. In 1552, an Ottoman force of 35,000-40,000 soldiers attacked the castle, which was defended by 2,100-2,300 men. The siege was unsuccessful, with the Turks incurring significant losses, and 1,700 defenders survived. The Turks besieged the castle again in 1596, achieving victory. In 1701, the Austrians demolished half of the castle.
