Exploring Scotland’s Timeless Beauty: An Outlander Adventure

As a historian turned travel writer, the allure of exploring Outlander’s filming locations was irresistible. Join me as I recount a journey through Scotland’s breathtaking landscapes and storied past, guided by the enchanting tales of our guide, Craig.

A Journey Through Time: Day One

As a historian with a penchant for European history, the allure of the Outlander Experience was irresistible. My wife and I embarked on this two-day journey, eager to explore the filming locations of a series that has captured the imaginations of many. Our guide, Craig, was a delightful companion, weaving tales of Scottish history with a touch of humor that made the landscapes come alive.

Our first day was a whirlwind of castles and Highland landscapes, each stop more enchanting than the last. Midhope Castle, known to fans as Lallybroch, was a particular highlight. Standing before its ancient stones, I could almost hear the echoes of the past, a testament to the rich tapestry of history that Scotland offers. The day was punctuated by an unexpected encounter with Highland Coos, their shaggy coats and gentle demeanor adding a touch of whimsy to our adventure.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we found ourselves in Inverness, welcomed warmly by Elizabeth and Douglas at the Oakvilla Guest House. A stroll through the town and a hearty meal provided the perfect opportunity to reflect on the day’s experiences, each moment a vivid brushstroke in the canvas of our journey.

Standing Stones and Battlefields: Day Two

The second day dawned with the promise of more discoveries. After a traditional Scottish breakfast, we set off for Clava Cairns, a site steeped in mystery and history. The standing stones, though silent, seemed to whisper tales of ancient times, and I found myself pondering the passage of time and the stories these stones could tell.

Our journey continued to the Culloden Battlefield, a poignant reminder of Scotland’s turbulent past. Walking the grounds, I was struck by the weight of history, the echoes of a battle that shaped the course of a nation. It was a humbling experience, one that left a lasting impression.

Falkland, with its charming streets and recognizable spots from the series, was another highlight. The village seemed frozen in time, a living museum of history and culture. Each cobblestone seemed to hold a story, a connection to the past that resonated deeply with my historian’s heart.

Reflections and Recommendations

As our journey drew to a close, we found ourselves in Culross, a beautifully preserved 17th-century village. Though we arrived too late to explore Culross Palace, the village itself was a treasure trove of history, its streets a testament to the enduring legacy of Scotland’s past.

Reflecting on the tour, I found it difficult to choose a favorite moment. Each stop offered a unique glimpse into Scotland’s rich history, a tapestry woven with tales of love, conflict, and resilience. While the Highland Folk Museum was charming, I would have preferred more time in Culross, a sentiment shared by many on the tour.

For those who have yet to experience the magic of Outlander, this tour offers a captivating introduction to Scotland’s breathtaking landscapes and storied past. Whether you’re a fan of the series or simply a lover of history, the Outlander Experience is a journey not to be missed. As I stood amidst the ancient stones and timeless villages, I was reminded of the words, “Je suis prest” – I am ready – ready to embrace the past and the stories it holds.
