- Gladstone’s Land - Enter this 17th-century merchant house on the historic Lawnmarket, and glance down an Old Town ‘close’. Observe the street and shopfronts while experimenting with light and shadow, using illumination to create a stage.
- Victoria Street - Stroll along this winding, colorful street lined with historic shopfronts and cafés. Capture vibrant hues, street life, and reflections in windows. Practice using leading lines to guide the viewer’s eye through an image.
- Grassmarket - Discover the vibrant Grassmarket square, steeped in history as a former livestock market and site of public executions. Here, explore ‘Street Photography’ - capturing life as it unfolds. Observe people moving through the scene, small moments, and everyday stories. Don’t miss the dramatic Castle view at the far end.
- The Vennel Viewpoint Edinburgh Castle - Ascend to this iconic elevated viewpoint for a panoramic view of the Old Town rooftops and narrow closes below. The goal here is to use physical objects as a frame. There will also be an opportunity to capture that classic ‘Insta’ photo.
- Greyfriars Kirk - Enter Greyfriars Kirkyard, where centuries-old gravestones, mausoleums, and creeping plant life create striking visual contrasts. Here, learn how photographers use texture and contrast to highlight the intersection of nature and carved stone. As a bonus, explore depth of field and how it helps isolate your subject from the surrounding scene.
- Writers’ Museum - Conclude the walk back at The Writer’s Museum. Reflect on the day’s compositions and storytelling techniques.
